CHESS @ MAKSAK

Although I’ve always had a deep love for chess, I’ve considered it more of a fun extracurricular activity alongside my main role as a lecturer. Representing UTM at SUKUM felt like the perfect balance, and I was content with that. But then, in 2017, an unexpected opportunity came my way — I was invited to play in the MAKSAK selection. To be honest, I was a bit intimidated. This was a whole new level, with some participants being seasoned SUKMA athletes. Despite my nerves, something just clicked during the games, and I ended up winning! That victory didn’t just boost my confidence; it also opened the door for me to represent JOHOR in the MAKSAK competition, a milestone I never imagined I’d reach.

CHESS @ SUKUM

I first joined the UTM chess team back in 2013, thanks to Mr. Azri Hohad, the UTM team chess manager, who reached out and asked if I’d like to represent UTM. Excited by the opportunity, I eagerly accepted and soon found myself immersed in intensive training sessions. It was during these sessions that I had the chance to learn from some truly skilled and experienced players. Their passion for the game was contagious, and before I knew it, I had fallen completely in love with chess. What started as an invitation turned into a deep passion that continues to grow with every match I play.

CHESS @ USG

It all began when I decided to take a chance and try out for the faculty team in the UTM Staff Games (USG). PM Dr. Nasrul and PM Dr. Haizal observed one of my games and, after seeing how I positioned my pieces, they believed I could play well. Their confidence in me was a big boost, and it paid off. In the 2011 USG, my very first time representing the faculty in chess, I not only became the women’s champion but also contributed crucial points that helped FKE secure the team championship. The funny part is, at that time, I had just learned how to castle, but I had no idea what en passant was! This victory was a proud moment for me and sparked a deeper passion for the game.
